Learn Coaching Session

Learn- Coaching Session

I would like to say it was easy making the transition to an online coaching format after the breakout of COVID-19. However, with the shift from one teacher to another, it was a bit difficult. The good news is that I was already coaching the teacher I transitioned too. Both my former and current mentee both had the same focus. They both want to utilize the ELLevations software application to reach their struggling ESOL populations. In the Learn segment of the coaching series, my mentee focused on the strategy, "Find Your Match." Mrs. Trotter focused her student's attention on finding keywords and supporting details using the ELLevations strategy. Another area that was difficult was learning how to record my online coaching session. Luckily I found out that through my teaching Google account I could record my meeting sessions and upload them into iMovie for editing.  In the initial part of my coaching session, I went over the 10 questions proposed by Jim Knight's book to recap our first session. We also utilized the Checklist: I, WE, YOU DO IT from Knight's resources. I also went a step further and made a checklist of the requirements discussed in the strategy that Mrs. Trotter used in her coaching session. We reviewed the items we hit and discussed the areas that she would like to build upon. We also determined that it would be great to use this strategy with her incoming class next year. At the end of our coaching session, I said that I would look into a digital tool that we could use in addition to the existing ELLevations strategy. I mentioned that it could potentially create more interest in learning the keywords. The biggest takeaways that Mrs. Trotter noted that she would like to extend the lesson over multiple days to help reinforce the concepts that were introduced and potentially add a writing component as the students gain a stronger command of the use of the words. I felt encouraged by the session and was glad to see that my mentee felt good about the progress she made with the use of the strategy she chose to use with her small pull-out group. I look forward to our next session covering the "Improve" segment of the coaching series.
